Christmas on Ice

I need to preface this by saying that I am not a fan of ice shows.

And after this ice show, I need to invite all others who think like I (used to) think to consider this one because it is absolutely awesome. Whether we focus on the singing, the dancing, the skating, or Santa Claus himself, the show is top-notch. From the opening number to the closing routine, my children were riveted.

Okay, they’re 8 and 6, so that may have been a slightly hyperbolic statement, but what is not hyperbole is that one of the skaters swung my eight-year-old around on the ice after the show and totally made his night. More on that in a moment.

I cannot overstate the professionalism of everyone involved in the production. Some of the skaters are Olympians, the vocalists are clearly professionals, and the dancers were all expressive and on point. At no time during the performance did anyone in our group find ourselves distracted by anything less than elite. It was truly mesmerizing.

This was indeed a show called Christmas on Ice and the skating, which was impressive, absolutely anchored the show. Watching Olympic-level athletes swinging one another around, four inches off the ice while performing in tight groups is incredible. Every once in a while ice would flip into the crowd from their skates, surprising a casual observer.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the rink is only 29 feet by 38 feet. An Olympic rink is 200 feet x 100 feet. Wrap your head around that, then go buy tickets to see it for yourself.

And yet, these athletes managed to skate with precision through complex routines in a tiny space without losing any effect whatsoever. It was truly special and everyone loved it.

Unlike those who performed, I am certainly not a professional performer, nor have I ever even approached such a thing. What I saw though was a delightful mix of contemporary and classic/traditional dance choreography that made me smile in appreciation. It was neither overly simplified nor overly complex and trendy. I enjoyed it.

Santa made an appearance and took time at the show’s conclusion to pose for photos but the real treat was Doc Cheatem greeting everyone at the entrance. For those unfamiliar, Doc is Silver Legacy’s resident magician and sleight-of-hand expert. He’s been around for more than 20 years and is simply terrific, dazzling children and adults alike with his magic tricks. Doc alone is worth the price of admission and if you’re fortunate enough to see him, you won’t forget it.

I mentioned my kid getting swung around at the end. It wasn’t the highlight of the evening, per se, but it was the cherry on the top of the proverbial ice cream cone. I always enjoy it when the cast greets the attendees but this went above and beyond, which pleased everyone. Who knows, perhaps they created a fan for life.

But for me, it was the beginning of a magical Christmas season.
