Ken’s story (indeed his family’s story) is one of hope and resilience. His daughter Emily was diagnosed at the age of 7 with medulloblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He recounts for us the thoughts and feelings he went through as a dad and husband during the weeks and months following the diagnosis and treatment. Ken tells us about about some things he learned from the experience, including what the term “late effects” mean (impact on young brains after cancer treatment), the developmental impacts on his daughter, and especially the lesson of learning how to be more present for his family. “You’re not guaranteed another day with your daughter,” Ken says.

We also learn a little about ways to support our friends and family that might find themselves in a situation like this — helpful info on how to step up if you know someone who needs it. The statistics show that it’s a decent bet that you might know someone who is dealing with childhood cancer… 1 in 285 children will have to fight cancer (as a child!).
