Reno Dads Podcast Episode 23: arte italia and NeoRealismo

In this episode, we get to hear about a hidden gem here in Reno, arte italia. Hiding out in plain site on the corner of California and Flint, a few blocks away from the Nevada Museum of Art, it is arguably among the best Italian heritage foundations in the entire United States!

This month (and for the rest of 2019), they’re welcoming an incredible exhibit of photographs that provide a look at life in Italy from the 1930s, when Mussolini came to power, through 1960, in the aftermath of WWII: NeoRealismo: The New Image in Italy. Executive Director, Kristen Avansino provides a colorful history of the organization, and how she discovered this collection of photographs. Once she saw it in New York City, she says she just knew she had to bring it here to Reno.

The exhibit features some 110 prints — primarily vintage photographs — captured by more than 50 Italian photographers, paired with the original magazines, photobooks, and newspapers in which they circulated. These are curated from private collections and on view exclusively at arte italia from September 27 through December 29, 2019.

The display also includes film excerpts by such notable directors as Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini, and Luchino Visconti, alongside related movie posters.

The history of the building the arte Italia currently occupies is definitely worth learning about, as well. We hope you’ll take the family out to the exhibit and see just how special this local program is, and how lucky we are to have it right here in Reno.
