In this episode, the Reno Dads podcast welcomed Washoe County Sheriff and dad Darin Balaam. Sheriff Balaam is a dad — four kids ranging in age from 10 to 24, including teenaged twins, so he knows a thing or two about fatherhood.
He’s also been in law enforcement for over 20 years, and his experience led him to be elected Sheriff last year. For folks who are new to the area and might not know what the Sheriff’s Department is responsible for here in Washoe County, we got a quick primer on what the role is, and just how much the department is involved with. From detention services, to patrol, special operations, and all the associated administration, the Sheriff’s office has a wide range of community touch points.
We also talked about some of the services provided by the department that might not be as well publicized — especially around mental health and addiction services in the detention facility. As it turns out, the Sheriff’s Department is currently operating the largest mental health facility in Northern Nevada.
Finally, we asked Sheriff Balaam our “Fast Five” to get to know him as a dad, and what being a father means to him. We hope you enjoy our conversation and getting to know Darin Balaam a bit better!
